Zero direct to landfill

Simply Lunch is working hard to divert, reuse or eliminate waste whenever we can.

In the UK we use 12.5 million tonnes of paper & cardboard every year. Cardboard is a major nuisance in landfill sites due to its volume-to-weight ratio. In fact, cardboard can be recycled 4/5 times before finally being shredded for use as animal bedding. There is no reason why cardboard should ever go to landfill. That’s why at Simply Lunch all cardboard used within our business is bailed, recycled and put back into the system.

Also, in the UK we produce 4.5 million tonnes of plastic, unfortunately, 85% of this ends up in landfill. However, Simply Lunch has effective procedures in place to ensure this does not happen. All plastic used within our business is sorted and sent for recycling.

There are approximately 6.6 million tonnes of food waste within the UK. Although food waste does break down, more can be done. That is why all our food waste at Simply Lunch is collected by our partner and converted into energy at an anaerobic digestion plant. Anaerobic digestion is a process by which organic matter such as animal or food waste is broken down to produce biogas and/or bio-fertiliser.
