Pancake Day

Pancake Day

It’s that time again!

Very soon people up and down the country (along with much of the world, in fact!) will be taking part in the big feast day before the Christian fasting time of Lent. I have fond memories of creating simple, tasty discs made from flour, eggs and milk.  If you were anything like me, you would flip them up in to the air, only for many of my attempts to classically land in a crumpled magnolia mess on the floor!

Special Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday is a unique day as it is typically held on a different date each year, with its mark on the calendar determined by where Easter Sunday falls. Traditionally the day marked the start of 40 days of fasting leading up to Easter. Anglo Saxon Christians used to attend confession (where they were shriven). The word shrove comes from the word shrive, which means to obtain absolution from sin.

Pancake Day Activities

These days, whether religious or not, Shrove Tuesday has largely become part of a person’s annual routine, being widely known as Pancake Day. Some regions even celebrate the day further by running events and competitions. In Olney, Buckinghamshire they have a pancake race where contestants must toss their pancake three times during the race, before completing the course which ends at the town church. The first to serve it to the bell ringer and receive a kiss is the winner! Some schools also hold competitions to see if they can toss a pancake over a high bar, the person with the highest toss wins.

Historical vs Modern Times

Pancakes have come a long way since the Roman and Elizabethan times, where they used to flavour them with spices and honey or rosewater and sherry. Over the last decade we have seen a number of pancake eateries pop up throughout the UK, so we are very fortunate to be able to enjoy them all year round with many different variations of topping! The classic topping nowadays, and my personal favourite, is the delicious combination of lemon and sugar. Others are quite partial to maple syrup, and a selection of fruits with cream. Pretty much anything goes nowadays, with savoury crepes also being in style!

However you enjoy your pancakes this Shrove Tuesday, please have fun and remember to flip responsibly!
